Are You Smarter Than A 5th Grader?…
Tonight was the Australian premier of the new game show on Channel Ten called Are You Smarter Than A 5th Grader? hosted by Rove McManus.
Every week a contestant will test their skills against five regular ‘class mates’ in order to try and win $500,000. The five kids they do battle with are Sam, Moya, Callum, Darcy and Max.
It seems from tonight’s contestants that in order to get on the show you must be able to act like a complete dickhead as if Australian television has been instantly converted into American television. (or is it just me?)
They then start off by looking at an old school photo of the contestant…
The contestant then will choose a child to do battle with when answering the questions, with each question answered right getting the contestant higher on their money tree. The contestant also has what are called ‘cheats’ and they are Peek, Copy and Save. Peek is where the contestant can look at the child’s answer, Copy is when the contestant must choose the same answer as the child, and Save is when the contestant gets the question wrong but the child gets it right, they can then take the money…
It will be interesting to see how well this show does in the ratings, but from a personal point of view I would not be able to stand watching another episode of this, but you may think different.

I agree, this show is terrible. I’ve seen a little of it over here in America, where it’s been running for a while. One thing I cannot understand: Why is Rove associated with such rubbish?

Please feel free to challenge me, but as an educator, my daily goal is to encourage children to learn new information that will hopefully pertain to real life, getting a job, interacting in society etc. This show makes a bit of a mockery of what school is truly about…preparing children for life. Although a business major does not know what ‘ctrl s’ stands for… why bother going to school anyhow?? and really, most average 5th graders would NOT be able to answer many of the questions posed.

Well after watching the second episode of 5th grader, I am sure the producers are trying to dumb down our kids even further. The female contestant was kicked off the show for giving a CORRECT answer. The correct answer being “Max and I” NOT Max and me. If they cannot get the answers correct, then the show should be pulled from the air. This is not the way to teach our next generation. We need smarter kids that can lead this country in the future. If the producers are no smarter than a kindergarten level child, perhaps they could use the 5th grade kids to do the questions.
Totally disgusted.

A business major does not know what ctrl-s is…. The show is fixed. Kids are irritating and know the answers beforehand… and to get 500000 for such nonsense like peek and copy and save life lines…unfair as well to the hard working people out there who earn so much less in a year.

Hey, i think that this show is alright but doent have the right name! i am a grade A or somtimes B student in grade nine with a good general knowledge and some of those questions are quite difficult! i dont see how a 5th grader could answer those!
but anyway i like it cause it is a good challenge for me, thank you producers but u should probly change the name.

Actually Lydia, the answer to the grammer question was correct. It is NOT Max and I, it is Max and me. Consult a respected grammar manual and it will tell you the same thing.
The show isn’t bad, especially compared to the trash that is on at the same timeslot on other channels.

Its me because if u take out ‘max’ it becomes “darcy was talking to me”

guys, this is a great show but watch it for what it is…. a fun and entertaining game…. these kids are obviously NOT your average fifth grader. However i have to agree on the whole get the answer right thing, the whole Max and Me thing really annoyed me, that was simply stupid. Almost as stupid as Berts Family Fued allowing Africa to be the answer for a country beinning with “A”….

I just finished watching tonight’s show. The final question was: How many subjects are in the sentence “Sticks and stones may break my bones”. The answer, according to Rove, (as well as the contestant and a number of the smarty pants kids), is 3. Does anyone else agree with me that this answer is incorrect? ‘Sticks and stones’ is a subject phrase made up of TWO subjects, ‘may break’ is the verb phrase and ‘my bones’ is the object phrase. English is an SOV language. Subject, object, verb. And this is a classic example of such a sentence. If bones were a subject, languages which make use of case particles rather than word order would be in great trouble; we wouldn’t know in Latin, for instance, whether the bones broke the sticks and stones or whether it was the other way around. This show is pure entertainment and we shouldn’t take it seriously. There’s nothing academic about it, but it’s annoying that it makes pretensions to be about academia.

Sam I bow down to your knowledge of AFL - I don’t even follow the game (and i’ve nearly had Essendon fans lynch me for that one!) so I couldn’t possibly compete with you, but seeing you stumping Rove everytime is pure gold. Also I can’t compete with your knowledge of Science as the only science i was good at was Psychology. Props to you little man! I am NOT smarter than you in that regard, so if I ever get on the show, I hope you can help me out buddy. (It’ll be embarrassing when they pull out those old photo’s though!)

Here’s a great question for the programme….
WHY ARE ALL THE KIDS WEARING EARPIECES?
As I see it - there are only two possible reasons…
1. They are being fed ‘funny’ lines to say…
2. Horror upon horrors…they are being fed the answers (mostly correct answers, some wrong) by the producers of the programme.
Either way - it’s not a great way to go about things eh.

The kids are not fed the answers or comments, everything that is said to them relates to camera positioning etc. Also everything that is said is recorded so that the contestants cannot dispute any wrong doing. I know because my friend was a contestant.
