NYE Goes Off With A Bang…
New Years celebrations were held all over the world last night, but more importantly what was shown on Australian Television to mark this occasion? The main focal point for Australian celebrations has always been the Sydney Harbour Bridge with Network Ten broadcasting the event for the second time in a row. Ten’s coverage started at 8:30pm with the family fireworks and performances from some notable Australian performers, and was hosted by Kim Watkins (9am) and Andrew G (Australian Idol), also joined by Fuzzy (Video Hits).

When it came time for the midnight fireworks in Melbourne it was a competition between all three commercial networks. Seven and Nine showcased the Melbourne fireworks which traditionally Nine done alone. However this year the Nine Network lost its City of Melbourne advertising contract to the Seven Network, this is why Seven joined in this year with what you could call the ‘official’ City of Melbourne fireworks while the Nine telecast was sponsored by the Melbourne Aquarium. In my opinion the Nine telecast was far more superior, as the Seven equivalent felt like we were watching the coverage via satellite, it just wasn’t clear enough and for an event like this where you need your images to be clear. Before hand Nine also had a music clip show called New Years Eve Party Zone hosted by Richard Wilkins, which included Nine Network personalities wishing a Happy New Year.

Seven’s coverage was hosted by Geoff Cox host of Coxy’s Big Break a Victorian travel show, he was on the observation deck of the Eureka Tower. The angle on which Coxy was presenting was shocking to say the least, however you can imagine if it was done horizontal we would have seen the reflection in the glass of the camera lighting, and also a little unprofessional in regards to the microphone cube, which looks to be the Seven News cube but they have covered up the News part with duct tape.

Coxy was joined by sports reported Michael Felgate who was covering the fireworks from the Docklands precinct and well as Kelly Loundry from Federation Square, once again very blurry broadcast of Kelly as if she was in America and not Melbourne.

The Seven telecast to fill in time also looked back at 2007 with their 7 top political moments presented by political reporter Mark Riley as well as the top 7 sporting moments presented by Michael Felgate, and the Herald Sun readers top 10 photo’s for 2007.

Then it was time for the main event… the fireworks…

Nine’s coverage was hosted by Gorgi Quill from Federation Square and she was joined by Glen Moriarty from Crown Casino and Rob Mills in the square. The Nine coverage had a segment on the best bars around Melbourne and Gorgi also spoke to Shane Crawford and Garry Lyon.

Then it was time for the fireworks once again…

In the mean time in that other city us Melbournians do not really like to refer to… Sydney was the Network Ten fireworks which lasted 12 minutes and cost the city 4 million dollars…

The New Years Eve celebrations gave the networks a chance to promote their 2008 line-up, and this will be looked at in the coming days. If you would like to view the Seven Network line-up for 2008 I have posted a YouTube video of their presentation which lasted 12 minutes, so the video is split into two parts to comply with YouTube’s 10 minute policy. Just click the YouTube logo on the right hand side.
Once again Happy New Year from What’s On The Tube…
