XXXX Gold Beach Cricket, Proudly Brought To You By XXXX Gold…
You may wonder about the tacky title for this post so I shall explain it. I’m quite sure it would have been the first episode of The Chaser’s War on Everything for 2007, they showed the ridiculous amount of advertising for XXXX Gold during Network Ten’s telecast of Beach Cricket, and this year is no exception.

The Beach Cricket coverage is hosted by Andrew Maher, who is more recognisable to people in the southern states as the host of the show Before The Game and Ten’s footy analysis show The 5th Quarter. He was also joined by former cricket play Colin Miller, with Mark Howard as their roving reporter.

Last year the three teams to compete were Australia, England and the West Indies, with England taking out the inarguable series. This year the West Indies have stayed home allowing for the inclusion of a New Zealand team. The captains, for Australia Allan Border, England Graham Gooch, and for New Zealand Martin Crowe.

The rules of Beach Cricket are basically the same as your average game of cricket with some exceptions.
- The winner is decided by the most runs accumulated…
- A batsman does not go out, rather when they are deemed out, the team will lose five runs…
- A one handed catch means minus seven runs from the bating team…
- Their is no Leg Before Wicket (LBW) if the batsman plays a shot…
- The match last’s for 16 overs with each team batting for eight…
Some new rules for 2008…
- Number of players has increased from 6 to 7…
- The wicket keeper must remain behind the stumps for the whole game, meaning they can’t bowl…
- And as a joke the New Zealand team has requested that the Beach Cricket Administration outlaws under-arm bowling…
Also this year the ball has been made of a harder rubber compound compared to last years, and the surface of the pitch has been changed to yellow Astroturf.
The first round is from Scarborough Beach in Perth and the first match underway was England verses New Zealand, following that it was then England verses Australia.

And a little bonus for the male fans of Beach Cricket, Cheerleaders…
