It’s A Good News Week For Ten…

feature photo

Tonight was the return of Good News Week to Network Ten after it was pulled off air eight years ago. The show originally started off at the ABC before making the transition to Ten, and throughout all that time it has been hosted by Paul McDermott. In this years reincarnation Mikey Robbins returns as one of the team captains, while on the other team Julie McCrossin has been replaced by Claire Hooper.

As said above the show works by having two teams with the first team having Mikey Robbins as captain, and tonight he was joined by Cal Wilson and former tennis player Pat Cash.

The second team with captain by Claire Hooper was joined by the always funny Frank Woodley, and Craig Reucassel from The Chaser.

The show works by looking at the weeks events dominating the news, footage will be shown of selected portions of news reports and the team members will then try to figure out what the story is all about. One of the games titled ‘So You Think You Can Mime’ involved a team member having to charade the news story given to them with the remaining members having to guess what that news story was.

Someone from the marketing department came up with a very clever and obvious cross promotion when Jensen Ackles the star of Network Ten’s Supernatural came on to answer some questions. The funny thing was that at the exact same time he walked out a banner came on the screen promoting the show which happens to follow the conclusion of Good News Week.

All up Good News Week is a nice little show for Ten to fill a gap in its programming because of the writers strike. It could have been because it was the first show back as it seemed a little slow at times, however it is nice to see programs of this variety on Australian Television as it makes the viewer want to watch something relaxing in the hope of having a few laughs. I don’t see GNW being a ratings hit for Ten although it will hopefully find a nice small regular audience to keep the show going. The show sort of falls into the category of Letterman whereby its the same old jokes and you know what is going to happen, but you want to watch it anyway because its a nice bit of light entertainment.

Good News Week will be on Ten every week Monday 9pm.

  1. It is nowhere NEAR as good as it used to be!! Why they couldn’t have just used the ideas from the OLD GNW is beyond me, but anyway…

Something told me they’d designed in a very rushed way. The OLD set used to have newspaper headlines on the panels, not computer chips or motherboards. Any why oh why is Paul now singing the theme?!? It just seems rushed.

  2. I don’t think trying to recreate the series exactly as it was originally would work, really, though I never watched the original series (too young, got sent to bed) so I may be mistaken. I thoroughly enjoyed last night’s episode, laughed the whole way through. Can’t wait to get to a recording!

  3. i used to watch the old GNW and was one of favorite shows unfortunately when it went to channel ten they abused it and overdid the popularity of it lets hope they dont do that again
