MP Want’s Gordon Ramsay Censored…

feature photo

It was inevitable that this issue would arise and if you are a regular viewer of Ramsay’s Kitchen Nightmares on the Nine Network, you would already be well aware of the amount of language used during the show.

Last Thursday night it was counted that the celebrity chef used the ‘F-word’ more than 80 times in the one hour episode screening at 8:30pm. Like in Australia, the United Kingdom watch the series un-censored, but in the United States where bad language on television is frowned upon, every swear-word and minor word us Australian’s wouldn’t think twice about saying is bleeped out. As the Nine Network’s chief classification officer Richard Lyle pointed out on last night’s A Current Affair story on Gordon Ramsay, if they were to bleep out every word the episode would sound like a truck reversing and their would be no way of knowing what anyone was saying.

Plus why would they (Nine) want to? Ramsay’s Kitchen Nightmares has been pulling in over 1.5 million viewers each episode making it the most watch show most night’s it goes to air. Clearly the vast majority of people watching are enjoying the concept of the show and are not offended by the amount of course language used.

One member of parliament Liberal senator Cory Bernardi however is not seeing the lighter side of the show and will today introduce a motion calling for a study into the broadcasting code of conduct. He say’s that the motion is a result of the Nine Network airing an episode of Kitchen Nightmares where the ‘C-word’ was used and not censored, shown in a 9:30pm time slot.

“The word used is grossly offensive to mainstream Australia. There is no justification for the use of such language in the public arena, particularly by our free-to-air broadcasters.

The senator adds that this is not the sort of language we want our kids to be using and that it is concerning that the use of profanity is accepted. Well the vast majority of people would agree with this, but then it comes down to why are the parents letting there children watch a program at 9:30pm with so much swearing? Parent’s need to re-enforce that NO means NO if they don’t want there child watching, and this is clearly not happening if parents have to complain to newspapers and senators because they wont take on the responsibility of saying what there children can or cannot watch.

One of the many letters in today’s Herald Sun ‘Your Say’ section say that they would actually rather their kids heard those words than witness some of the storylines lately on television, with reference to the recent incident on Neighbours where a student was having a relationship with a teacher. This of course is shown at a 6:30pm time slot.

In the end it is all up to peoples different values and ethics, but the point of all this is that one persons values and ethics therefore should not be preached to other people who think otherwise. It is up to the individual to decide what is right for them, and if these people complaining about the amount of language used is inappropriate, then the solution is a very simple and affective one. Pick-up the remote, change the channel or shove in a Disney family DVD there are literally hundreds to choose from.

  1. It’s easy: If you’re offended by strong language, don’t watch Gordon Ramsay.

If Nine censored the language, viewer numbers would drop like a rock and people would go to downloads for the show instead.

Yes, adults like to be treated like adults and served up appropriate TV programming.

Parents who complain about the effect of adult viewing on their children just want to blame someone else for their bad or lack of parenting.

  2. IF YOU WERE to blank out all the bad words most of the show would not have any audio and no one would want to watch that. plus most people watch it beacuse of its consant swearing

  3. Classified it as “M”.
Children must not allowed to watch it.

  4. Would bleeping language change a viewer’s response to watching Gordon Ramsay, they’re still dirty words under all that bleeping. Gordon Ramsay’s business success over the years has been partly from doing and saying exactly what he feels is right. Does he get results? Yes, does it make for compelling viewing? Yes, Will our children end up using the same language, probably.

I don’t tend to watch cooking shows though ‘Nightmare Kitchens’ brings a new and interesting angle to world of cooking. And like food, if it’s what people want, give it to them. Turn it off if you don’t like it, make sure the kids are in bed (rated M), and baste in the wonderful world of Gordon Ramsay, you might learn a thing or two, we have.

  5. I think if people dont like the bad language said, then they should simply change the channel or get used to it, cause its not like we have never heard the words before! and if you think they are affencive then get over it because they are JUST words!

  6. You and I as customers want good food for our buck. If we don’t like the food, the service or it’s over priced then we usually don’t go back. As a hopefully fairly liberal educated consumer I don’t need the government to tell me I CAN’T listen to a swear word. If I’m so offended I’ll switch off.

If you’ve ever been in a very busy kitchen then you know there’s not much time for niceities - Ramsay tells it as it is.

  7. Have to agree that the language is fucking discusting.
If you are that easily offended maybe you should take Gordon’s advice and fuck off!!!

  8. I love Ramsay..He is brilliant at what he does and helps a lot of people and is totally hilarious. Ramsay’s right people need to get their heads out of their asses and turn it off if they find it offensive. I don’t and I work in childcare!! I try not to miss an episode I love Ramsay!!!!!

  9. I have to say that I am a 24 year adult and never miss the show, it is the time that myself and my partner sit down and have a good fuckin laugh about all of what he is saying.
I used to work in a pub and a resturant and the “bad words” that come out of peoples mouths there are much worst then what you hear on the show.If people dont like what he is fuckin sawing ither change the channel or get the hell over it.
And why are parents letting there kids watch it in the first place if they dont like the bad words coming out of his mouth and how do they know what is coming out of his mouth unlessthey are watching it any way and enjoying as much as everone else, Shit I was brought up with worst words then that but I am not using every second word as fuck or worst get over it.

  10. I love Ramsey. The swearing is all part of his personality. If people do not like it, don’t watch it, Simple!!! Lighten up, its hilarious.

  11. I love Ramsey. The swearing is all part of his personality. If people do not like it, don’t watch it, Simple!!! Lighten up, its hilarious. If they take him off CH9 I will watch him on Fox, which I already do anyway.
