My Afternoon At Good News Week @ The Melbourne International Comedy Festival…
Today (Saturday 5th April) I went into the audience of Good News Week which is in Melbourne to record two episodes for the Melbourne International Comedy Festival. The first show started at 1:45pm and will be broadcast on Network Ten this coming Monday, while the second show started at 4:45pm and will be broadcast the Monday after.
The panel members for this Monday’s show will be for the ‘Robbins team’, Corrine Grant and Reginald D. Hunter, while for the ‘Hooper team’ it is Wil Anderson and Frank Woodley.
Some surprises in the recording were the return of Flacco and Sandman who during the break has a short routine. Flacco was wearing a suit to make it look like he had a little too many steroids, and has a stunning new product for everyone to purchase, a rubber band which will give you the abs you are willing to die for. Sandman was dressed as a large looking pink mustick, or very pink penis as he put it.
The show itself in the Melbourne Town Hall lasted for two and a half hours, which seems like a long time but you would never know it as the crew were entertaining the whole time. Paul McDermott is a blast to be in the presence of with his energy and wittiness which flows right onto Mikey Robbins and Claire Hooper.
Before the show started recording Paul singled out an old woman in the audience making jokes at her expense for just being old, and also a young girl in the front was picked on for being young and shouldn’t be hearing the ‘foul language’ being said. Of course the temptation could not be resisted at making fun of people from Geelong and also Frankston.
During the breaks the production crew were made fun of constantly as they had to keep sweeping up all the paper blasted at the start of the show, with the question also raised if people at home will notice that after each break there was less paper on the stage.
Another surprise was that the Umbilical Brothers helped the Robbins team in the So You Think You Can Mime segment, only to loose all points because they made noise and the fact they should be professional mimes made the situation even more funny.
Reginald D. Hunter was one of the highlights, always talking about groupies and I’m sure you can imagine where those conversations went. It will be interesting to watch on Monday because there will need to be so much editing to conduct with all the conversation and stories that went on.
UPDATE: Now that the show has gone to air as expected a lot of editing needed to be done. In the segment where they had to put a caption with the photo, only one team got to play the game, however it can be seen why the other half was edited out because it seemed like they were all playing along anyway.
Good News Week can be seen on Network Ten at 8:30 or 8:40pm depending if So You Think You Can Dance can finish on time, Monday Night’s.
