Sam Newman Reveals He Offered To Resign…

UPDATE: Video at bottom…

Tonight on The Footy Show Sam Newman has revealed that he offered to resign from the network in order to not do any more damage to the show and its regulars Garry Lyon, James Brayshaw and Trevor Marmalade.

In a segment that ran for around about 30 minutes of the show, Garry Lyon went through the details of what happened and how the facts had been reported wrong in the media, and that one of the woman’s names on a letter to the AFL Sally Capp (Collingwood board member and ANZ board member) did not want to be apart of it.

Newman revealed as stated above that he wanted to resign, but GTV9 boss Jeffery Browne replied that because Newman is under contract it will be in fact him who decides when his services were no longer required.

Garry Lyon apologised on Monday night’s Footy Classified to Caroline Wilson about the incident where she accepted that apologie, and wanted to make it clear that she had nothing to do with the letter that has been sent to the AFL to make a complaint. The AFL is said to be satisfied with the way the Nine Network handled the situation and will take no action.

Sam clearly uncomfortable about the situation explained his side of the story saying that he loves women, but he got caught in a bit of a pickle when he said that women should not be involved at board level in football. People are going to publish this as a huge negative and use it against him there is no doubt about that, but I think what he was trying to say just came out wrong. The point he was trying to get across was that women would not have the expertise in the department of recruiting the right players to a football team, but of course are exceptionally capable of fulfilling administrative roles.

At the end of the day what Sam was saying is absolutely true, if the same segment was done with a male mannequin or the segment was towards a male then there wouldn’t be a problem, and women should not be excluded from satire, after all they are 50% of the audience. Some people may agree or disagree with this and or with what Sam has said, but in my opinion what he thinks is right but he just didn’t say it right and tomorrow’s papers are going to blast him for it.

I’m not going to go into full details of what happened as I have uploaded the YouTube video of the segment, it is in two parts in order to comply with the 10 minute rule on YouTube. As always let you feelings on the issue be known below if you feel the need.
