Sam Newman “rested” From The Footy Show…
The lead story in today’s newspapers and certainly in the Melbourne Herald Sun was that Sam Newman has been told to take an extended break from The Footy Show.
This is on the back of the recent mannequin incident involving the chief football writer for The Age newspaper Caroline Wilson, the same newspaper Newman accused of being run by hacks and subsequently made The Age pull all advertising from the show.
.
All afternoon in Melbourne Seven News has been running with this incident as its lead story for the 6pm edition of the news, and also had a story about it on the 4:30pm edition. This afternoon Samantha Armytage interviewed Melinda Tankard Reist from the Women’s Forum Australia who says that the Nine Network has not gone far enough in condemning Newman for the sexist actions he took. Ironically during this report Seven showed the footage over and over while talking over the top, so what message is that sending?
Melinda is seeking that all advertisers for the program remove their support for The Footy Show, she adds that any reputable organisation would not want to be associated with a program promoting sexual harassment.
The story was the third featured on Ten News Melbourne tonight and it can be viewed below in the YouTube video.
Naturally the story was one of the main stories on Seven News Melbourne even requiring a live cross to the outside of Newman’s apartment complex in the Docklands, also it can be viewed in the video below.
Nine left its report on the matter surprisingly late in the bulletin with a short report from Tony Jones, however A Current Affair later had a bit more to say even if it did use recycled footage from previous interviews with Newman.
The funny thing out of all of this is that Seven are running a news poll on there web site, just goes to show Seven will milk something when it involves Nine, but Nine would do the same.
The Footy Show itself didn’t make a big deal about the situation, just stating that Sam will make a return in 2 or 3 weeks and in that time Billy Brownless will be his replacement.
