Sudden Impact - An Exclusive First Look…

feature photo

Now an exclusive first look at a brand new show which will be coming to the Nine Network in the second half of 2008 called Sudden Impact. One of the stories that will air on the show will feature that of Nicole Newbury who was involved in a serious crash with her boy friend at the time in the suburb of Clyde, located in Melbourne’s South Eastern growth corridor.

Nicole talks about how back on November 2nd last year she and her boyfriend Tom decided that they would celebrate the completion of all assignments and university for the year, with plans to head down to Phillip Island for a relaxing time. But on this night they were on there way out to a party and Nicole was the designated driver deciding not to drink as they would be around Tom’s friends enabling him to drink with his mates.

After being at this party for a while they decided they would leave and stop off at McDonalds in Cranbourne, this was at around 12:45am after which they had decided to head back home. The roads in this area are not the best of roads, they are well known for the large roundabouts at major highway intersections with the roads having 100 km speed limits. The roads are consistently changing as well with all the new housing estates establishing in the area.

As they proceed down a long stretch of road they noticed a really bright light which was assumed to be another car coming in the opposite direction with its high beams left on. As they approached closer the light got brighter and brighter and became unbearable to look at meaning that Nicole had to slow down to 70 km in an effort to be able to stay on the road.

Suddenly in the blinding light all that could be seen were a set of hooves from a horse, it leapt up with its large brown head and a distinctive white blaze smashing its way through the windscreen of the car. With that sudden impact a chilly gust of wind was forced onto the occupants faces with those bright lights still piercing through the darkness, Nicole blacked out for a few seconds only to be shocked when coming out that there was no longer a roof on the car.

Nicole’s first thoughts were that of the welfare of Tom who was unconscious from the accident, all she could do was grab him with one hand and use the other to call 000, she realised that he wasn’t breathing. His body was dangling within the cars seat belt, leant over the dashboard and covered in blood. In a panic and still in shock Nicole moved his head back onto the seat head rest in order to attempt to stop the blood coming our of his head, however there was no head rest anymore, it had been completely removed from the impact, the only thing she could do was to hold his head herself.

Once establishing contact with the 000 service a lady approached what was left of the car, the same lady who had her high beams on only to say “I tried to warn you, I had my high beams on”. On the phone she was informed that an ambulance was on its way, but still had no response from her boy friend. Applying pressure to the wound, Nicole told those listening on the other end of the phone that their were still no signs of life from Tom. Suddenly there was a sign of Tom waking up again, he started to moan and grown followed by asking what had happened to them and stressing that he was in a huge amount of pain. An anominous man approached the vehicle to offer assistance to Nicole but all she could think about was Tom’s welfare asking the man to assist with applying a bandage to the wound on his head.

Once the ambulance service arrived they took Tom straight to the hospital, Nicole wanted to go but she had to be treated by another member from the ambulance for shock, on top of that Nicole was saturated in the blood of her boy friend. Once Tom arrived at hospital he underwent an operation that night and made a full recovery with Nicole by his side.

Nicole says that she still has nightmares about that night; and says that she would cry after the incident happened every time Tom drove a car thinking about it. Although the two are no longer together she is still proud to be the one who saved his life. This is one of the many stories that we will get to whiteness when this new series Sudden Impact comes to our screens, so stay tuned.

A very big thank you to Nicole for sharing her story and providing photographs of what her car looked like after the incident with some of the film crew filming in the background. To read the story in Nicole’s own words you can have a look at her blog entry here.
