Judgement Television: Judge Judy & Jury Duty…

feature photo

This can certainly be put in that category of “only in America” where people are willing to have there courtroom disputes telecast in front of millions of people. By now everyone would be aware of Judge Judy who has been on our screens for a number of years now with her tough lady image putting people in their place. For a short stint she was also joined by another program called Judge Joe Brown which worked in a simular way, but for those who love their courtroom drama you can get a whole hour of it by changing channels to a not so tough judge and celebrity jurors titled Jury Duty.

Judge Judy in one episode will usually look at two cases, each side of the story is presented and if caught telling a white lie Judge Judy will usually catch onto it with her extensive research of the case before proceedings begin. The show overlooks small claims cases and has been on air since 1996, and will continue until at least 2012.

Although various images and the flag behind her allude that the court is located in New York, the show is actually filmed in Los Angeles in a studio located next to the set of Judge Joe Brown.

Once the case has been decided each party will then step outside the courtroom and discuss what they thought of the judgement.

In contrast to Judge Judy there is Judge Bruce Cutler who is more of a “pussy cat”, when entering the court he will thank everyone before taking his seat and explain that the celebrity jurors will make the decision, if they cannot agree then he will make the decision.

Jury Duty has been running since the end of 2007 which makes it a relatively new show, however it has only one season under its belt and it is not known if a second will go to air. Jury Duty will only look at one case per episode with the celebrity jurors retiring to a room to discuss what their throughs are. They will then come back with their decision and the judge will then hand it down.

Judge Judy can be seen on Network Ten 3:00 Weekday’s and Jury Duty is straight after it at 3:30 on the Seven Network.
