Battle Of The Choirs…
Sunday night was the start of a new concept in the talent show genre titled Battle of the Choirs hosted by Sunrise host David Koch. The show works in the same way that the other simular shows work such as Dancing with the Stars, It Takes Two and Australia’s Got Talent however there is no home viewer vote meaning all of the power rests with the judges on the show. There are 16 choirs that will ultimately battle it out to become number 1 and to win $100,000 as well as a recording contract with Universal Music.
There are four judges on Battle of the Choirs and they are Jonathan Welsh, who is the director of the Choir of Hard Knocks, Charli Delaney who is well known for her role in the children’s group Hi-Five, Iva Davies known as the front man for the band Icehouse, and finally George Torbay a classical musician.
Every episode four choirs will battle it out by all firstly singing their own chosen song they have rehearsed. The judges will then give feedback on how the performance could be improved and what they expect of the group.
In addition to the groups solo performance they must also work together by singing a 30 second melody of a song each to help the judges make their decision.
By the end of the show the judges have the task of deciding first of all which team will go straight through to the quarter finals, then out of the three remaining choirs must decide which team will be eliminated from the competition. The two remaining teams will then battle it out with a pre determined song given to the a few weeks prior to the show, after they have presented their song the judges will decided which team will stay and who will go.
At the end of the day there is nothing really special about this show, it is basically the same format as any other show of its type by incorporating choirs into it. This show may appeal to an older audience but it is not going to be a hit like other shows of its type that Seven present especially when it is screening along side 60 Minutes. David Koch is the perfect host for the show, he has the persona to fit with an older audience but in reality this show will only decrease in appeal over time.
Battle of the Choirs can be seen on the Seven Network 7:30pm Sunday night’s.
