Electric Dreams with Amanda Keller…

In a new three part series on Network Ten hosted by Amanda Keller, Electric Dreams explores how a 40 year revolution in domestic technology has transformed family life.

Electric Dreams stages a compelling living experiment to find out how technology has changed our lives with one family’s home is taken back to the digital dark ages of 1970. Then in three weeks their technological progress is observed as they fast-forward through every new gadget and gizmo of the ensuing three decades.

The big question will be, how will they cope without Facebook and TV? What will they substitute their time with? What joys will they find in slide shows and early computer games? Will they bother with brick-like mobiles? How will they play, talk, relax and shop with only the technology of the 70s, 80s or 90s to help them?

The family’s journey will have huge resonances for us all as we see through their eyes the enormous impact of technological change on our physical and emotional lives. The show will attempt to reveal how TVs and computers have gradually multiplied and migrated out of the living room, technology has split the family into individualised private spheres; and we will witness how women’s domestic lives have transformed, as well as how childhood has become almost unrecognisable.

Electric Dreams will premiere on Network Ten, Sunday 1st November at 6:30pm.

Important to note that isn’t an Australian version…just the UK version with Amanda’s voice over the top :/

Its actually worse than that… we get the UK version completely gutted of all its 80’s hit pop music, then butchered of any segments showing snippets of other copyright programs or music video clips, then about a third of what remains is lopped out so that numerous commercial breaks can be jammed into its original 59 minute commercial-free runtime. Then further excise enough bits to allow Amanda to substitute her personal segments into it. Anybody that gets the opportunity to view the BBC original will find its 1000 times more enjoyable and covers much more. Although its not all TENs fault, BBC often has very limited copyright clearances for international distribution.

Where can I get some pics of the rooms. I missed the series and totally regret it. Watching Back to the Future once or even twice a month, I really want to design my bedroom so it looks just like an 80’s bedroom. Question: Were lava lamps fashionable then?
