Nightline set to return on Nine with Kelly Connolly…
Viewers vented outrage at the Nine Network when it decided to axe long running late night news bulletin Nightline in 2008, this was along with its other long running news and current affairs programme Sunday. Just short of a year later Nine responded by returning a late night news bulletin to the air only to call it Nine’s Late News, hosted by Wendy Kingston.
It now appears that Nine is looking at returning the Nightline brand back on Monday November 9 according to The Daily Telegraph. The bulletin will be hosted by Morning News anchor Kelly Connolly with Wendy Kingston moving to present the Morning edition of Nine News.
Nightline has been presented over the years by some of the most respected reporters and presenters back when Nine was number one for news. Past presenters include Jim Waley, Michael Usher, Hugh Riminton, Helen Kapalos and Ellen Fanning.
Nine is said to also be keen at ending one of the most frustrating aspects of free-to-air television and stop prime time programming running over time so that Nightline can have a permanent timeslot start.
The first thought to come to many peoples’ minds will be fat chance of that happening…

Nine is seeming to reverse all their bad decisions lately…
What next, Extra coming back?
Now, you know how Heather Foord felt, when she retired, then went back on the newsdesk six months later.
Good news. Hopefully Nine’s attempt at regaining the number one position for news and current affairs will pay off, as they are certainly trying hard.
Kelly Connolly’s a fantastic host, so good to see her on at night. Wendy is good as well though.
I think all nine news should be an Hour Bulliton and they meaning nine network should and Hey Hey and a weekend night news line up and well and 60 Minutes, Wide World Of Sports, if you want to see a schedule I did email me on Andrew.coster2@education.nsw.gov.au and I will email it to you during the week
terrific decision. It does seem Nine are reversing all there fatal decisions lately; Late News to Nightline, Sunday Morning News to Today, new 9 News sets, 1 hr Morning bulletin and more!
Hopefully we will see a serious revamp to ACA – which is in much need of an investment in quality journalism, more stories on major news of the day, more live crosses and interviews and a bigger focus on business, politics, the world and health.
Perhaps we can see also less sport in the NEWS bulletin, and all sport stories put in the sport segments, apart from major sporting days! ANd it would be great to see:
- Expanded political and financial coverage, with Laurie Oakes more prominent.
- Bring back Jana Wendt, Hugh Riminton, Ellen Fanning and Daniel Street.
- Better ACA stories and exclusives
Most of all, I would like the brand NATIONAL NINE NEWS brought back.
Good to see Nightline coming back with Kellie Connolly
