Nine News director talks about the future of news, & that Twitter embarrassment…
Jeremy Mitchell from Telstra’s ‘Now We Are Talking’ talks to the Nine Network’s News Director Mark Calvert about the changing landscape in news. He also talks about how traditional forms of news such as Nine News are being integrated with the web through services like ninemsn.
Calvert describes the reporting of news as becoming a lot more interesting with what a traditional news executive could see as ‘maverick’ news sites popping up on the internet and the formation of blogs. This is because they are “able to pump out what looks on the face of it like news content without any great filter or the normal journalistic checks and balances”.
But let’s not forget that now famous day of Michael Jackson’s death when Richard Wilkins reported that Jeff Goldblum had also died as ‘reported’ by New Zealand police. This came through a source on Twitter and made word wide news. Calvert says, “Very quickly we were able to check and dismiss the death of Jeff Goldblum but not before the reporting of his death had become an internet phenomenon.” Perhaps that check should of occurred first and not after reporting…
You can watch the full interview below which was conducted on the Nine News Sydney set; it provides a great insight into how the people behind our television news think.
