how to knit a ribbed scarf

– ITER’s is Janet with knitting patterns for beginners calm thanks for stopping by in video 1 with our number 8 needles of 5 millimeter needles and some worsted weight yarn number 4 we learned how to cast on stitches onto our needle the easy way okay now today we’re actually going to learn how to do the knit stitch so the first thing that you want to do is remember we don’t want to do the tails I want you to cast on 12 stitches okay go to video number 1 and cast on 12 stitches you’ve got 12 stitches on your needle this again is your working yarn this is your tail we’re not going to do anything with the tail today but we are gonna pick up our working yarn and what we’re going to do is just stick your index finger into it and now it’s between this finger and this finger okay and that’s how you’re gonna hold it then the yarn will just lay on the rest of your fingers on the underside of your hand okay alright so this is how it looks this is what we’ve got again this is knitting 4 crochets or people that just want to learn how to knit with their left holding the yarn with their left hand or a continental style it’s also called speed knitting and it’s called speed knitting for a reason because you can it’s so much faster like this ok alright so let’s get started the first thing that we’re gonna do is we’re going to take the needle that’s in our right hand we’ve got our two needles and we’re going to insert it into the first stitch now I gotta tell you something I don’t care whether you’re crocheting whether you’re knitting whichever the first row is always just the trickiest after the first row everything is super easy you’ll think what you know but it doesn’t matter how advanced you are how skilled you are the fur Rauf for everyone is always the trickiest because you’re just working with the baby stitches the stitches really don’t have the full stitch on them and the cast on stitch or anything else so don’t worry about it once you get the first row on it’s so much easier so just stick with me through the first row and we’ll get her done alright so we’ve stuck the needle in her right hand through our first stitch data got it okay now we’re just gonna wrap the yarn around the needle and you’re gonna pull it through the loop and then take it off that that needle off your left needle so you’ve got one stitch okay let’s do that again we’re gonna do it eleven more times okay there it is stick your needle through wrap it around and pull it through and again guys this is for everybody this is just this is just the struggle the struggle is real on the first row it doesn’t have to be so bad after you learn how to do it but that’s just it’s just hard the first time and that’s okay let’s not use that word hardly I’m sorry forgive me for that let’s use the word just a challenge okay insert your needle right through it right there see got it okay wrap the yarn around up see you and I dropped it pull it through now what you’re doing with this method is you’re you’re gonna learn how to knit so much faster but you’re also going to be able to really crochet like or excuse me knit just in more uniform because you’re not struggling to pull the yarn through pinky finger or whatever so that being said your tension is is right here tension is how tight or loose you are making your stitches and you’re just going to knit now what you’re going to find this is that this pinky there excuse me this index finger right here that your workhorse baby that thing is going to come in so handy when you’re knitting so believe it or not it’s really it just it’s it’s that easy all right so insert your needle wrap your yarn around pull it through insert your needle wrap your yarn around pull it through one two three four five you’ve got five stitches on there guys we’re doing great if you don’t pick that up okay now where do you put your stitches when you’re knitting well the first thing that you don’t want to do is you don’t want to drop a stitch so you got to watch out for that but keep your stitches you know pretty close but at the same point time you’re gonna have to move them down so when we get more stitches we’ll see how that’s done but for right now I don’t want you to like have your stitches so far apart that you’re pullin and you’re struggling to get your needle into the into the first dirt to the next stitch on your other needle so okay alright so we’re gonna go ahead we’re just gonna insert our needle yarn over pull through see how it’s getting easier insert our needle yarn over pull through now you’re when you’re inserting your needle into this into this stitch you’re going to sticking it in the front and you’re pushing it toward the back stick it there you go insert your needle yarn over pull it through insert your needle yarn over pull it through you got it that’s our first row okay let’s do another row what you have to do now is okay you’ve got all your stitches on this needle okay so you’re gonna transfer your stitches to this needle your empty needle okay so change hands put the needle with the stitches in your left hand and put the empty needle in your right hand okay here we go we’ve got our tail don’t worry about our tail but get it on the way so that it’s not you’re not knitting with that we don’t want to do that that’s a mistake okay here we go again we’re gonna stick our yarn wrap it around pull it through insert our needle wrap it around pull through okay get your stitches up to the end of your needle so that you’re comfortable remember grab it like this just grab the yarn grab the skein around your finger there you got it okay insert your needle wrap it around pull through start your needle wrap it around pull through insert your needle wrap it around pull through Surt your needle wrap it around pull through insert your needle wrap it around pull through insert your needle wrap it around pull through start your needle see how it’s easier wrap it around pull through cert your needle wrap your lap pull through start your needle wrap it around pull through our last stitch guys which is always just a little trickier but we got it insert your needle wrap it around whoops see excuse me start your needle wrap it around sir your needle wrap it around and pull through you know what we did here and I want you to see this because you’re going to have to address this we split the yarn so I’m going to take this off take this off and I’m going to insert my needle back through it so I’ve got all the yarn to see that okay that happens to everybody and the best thing to do is learn how to correct it so we’re going to insert our yarn back through all the loops wrap it around and pull it through okay we’re gonna do one more row just to make sure that we’ve got it because that last one was unplanned but again this is life this is real knitting and I’m not going to sugarcoat it you need to know how to correct something okay so let’s do that let’s insert our needle wrap it around pull it through insert our needle wrap it around pull it through insert wrap pull it through and pull it off the hook insert your needle wrap it around pull it through one more time and then I’m gonna slow it down again okay insert your needle wrap it around pull it through pull it off sir your needle wrap it around pull it through pull it off last stitch which is gonna go so much easier than that other one insert your needle wrap it around and pull it through okay look holy just it just knitted three rows and that is also called the garter stitch when you just knit like that keep knit knit knit knit knitting on each row it’s called the garter stitch and the one more thing I want to cover is before I end this video what if you make a mistake like we did like well I did not you did but like I did when I split my yarn in other words I stuck my needle through and I just caught it on a fiber or whatever and it got it got to split the yarn got split because see yarn is twisted it’s called this is worsted and so it’s twisted and the fibers are twisted together and sometimes we just get a little you know it gets a little wonky okay alright so let’s say we want to take a stitch out okay we’re working loops and knitting just like we work loops and crochet we’re working loops and knitting okay so we just want to take that one loop out okay if we make a mistake that’s okay we can fix it put that loop back on the other needle because you’re going to have to do the stitch again because I pulled that loop out that was the stitch I’m gonna fix it so I’m gonna insert my needle wrap it around pull through and pull off see so if you make a mistake on that and that’s how you do it we’ll talk about drop stitches and all that later that’s a lot more detail then we can get into in the beginning here but at least you know that if you if you have a problem with the last stitch which sometimes you will you can just pull that one loop out one loop and fix it okay guys thanks again for stopping by this is video number two how to do the knit stitch
